Double Dutch braids (simply 2 Dutch braids worn in one look) are a fun alternative to the ever popular French braid, and learning how to create a them couldn’t be easier! So, if you’re ready and willing, check out our step-by-step double Dutch braid guide below, and you’ll be a pro in no time.
Split your hair down the middle – or off-centre if you prefer – all the way to the nape of your neck. You can do this by using a comb for a defined line, or your fingers for a less-than-perfect look.
Secure one side with a hair tie or clip so it doesn’t become entwined with your second section. If you have bangs and want to keep them out of the braid, now will be the time to clip them separately. Now you’re ready to start the braiding process…
Take a small portion from one half of your hair and begin to separate it into 3 equal sections. Ensuring that your sections are the same size is crucial, as this will give you an even weave and a flawless finish.
Okay, so you’re prepped and ready to learn how to create a double Dutch braid. To begin, take your 3 sections from the front of your hair and cross the right strand under (not over) the middle strand, then cross the left strand under the middle strand.
Now start to add some of your loose hair into your sections as you weave. Once you reach the nape of your neck you can choose to either leave the rest of your hair loose, or continue to braid until the ends!
When you have your first braid, begin working on your second section of hair using the same method.
If you want to tame any flyaways or baby hairs use the VO5 Ultimate Hold Hairspray, which will give you 24-hour humidity protection and an all-day hold. As for any short hairs sticking out, use hair pins to discretely tuck them away.
